NEW NET Issues List for 26 Jun 2007

Below is the final list of issues for the Tuesday, 26 Jun 2007, NEW NET (Northeast Wisconsin Network for Economy and Technology) 7:00 pm weekly gathering. The Stone Yard is the site of today's tech enthusiast meeting, located at or near W3010 Edgewood Trail, Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. The reason for the "at or near" prepositional phraseology is because the address doesn't seem to work particularly well with online maps from Google, Mapquest, Yahoo or MSN. However, Andy M's directions are to take Ballard Rd north from Hwy 41, hang a right on JJ/Edgewood at the light by North High School, then The Stone Yard is on that street just past The Player's Choice.

BarCampChicago 2007: Six Days to Go

BarCampChicago 2007 (http://barcampchicago.com) begins in six days (or in seven days if one ignores the fun of gathering in the Windy City for the Friday evening social geekery) -- so the question is, "What should I/you do in these last few days before the latest CM3/I-94 technology unconference begins?"

There is a veritable horde of answers to this question, but presented herein are six high priority options for you to consider:
  1. Tell all your tech enthusiast friends about BarCampChicago 2007. Tell them in-person, IM them, blog about the event, twitter them, post it on all your wikis, email them, give them a call. In short, make sure your circle of friends and acquaintances knows about BarCampChicago. Invite all those you feel will make the event fun.
  2. Make arrangements for a BarCampChicago road trip. Find one, two or seven other people to go to barcamp with you. Especially focus on people who live in the CM3/I-94 region (those within ~200 miles of the Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis stretch of I-94) in order to build this region's tech community. Organize the road trip and get commitments from your fellow travelers. In the words of Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Road trippin with my two favorite allies, Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies..."
  3. Decide if you want to lead a session at BarCampChicago, or in what other ways you will be a participant in the event. Barcamps are not passive events. The reason to go is to be a useful and involved part of the event. If you're not sure how you can participate, read over the BarCampChicago website, read the Wikipedia entry for 'barcamp', Google for how others have participated in barcamps, or contact Jason Rexilius, the lead organizer for BarCampChicago 2007.
  4. Contact at least ten tech people you don't already know who are involved with tech areas you think are unique, innovative or compellingly interesting. Invite them to participate in BarCampChicago, especially focusing on why it would be cool if they led a session at the barcamp. If only one of the people you invite accepts your call to action, your time will have been well-spent. Even if none of the ten (or twenty) tech strangers you invite participate in BarCampChicago, they may become involved in other barcamps or your invitation may be the beginning of a new relationship in your network of tech contacts.
  5. Think about and write down your BarCampChicago goals. What do you want to accomplish during the technology unconference? Come up with a list that's exciting and meaningful to you, but objectives to consider include:
    1. Meet ten new sympatico tech people who have some or many of the same interests as you. Make sure to get their contact info (email, phone number, website, etc) so you can connect with them after the barcamp.
    2. Participate in BarCampChicago by doing _______.
    3. Before the weekend is over, schedule two (or five?) post-barcamp in-person meetings with fellow barcampers.
    4. Find one new tech topic of high interest to you and make connections with five new people who are also interested in that topic.
    5. Have fun at the conference by playing a new game with someone on the Wii or by doing _______.
  6. Get lots of sleep over the next five days. You'll need it because there may not be much time to sleep during the barcamp weekend.
See you at BarCampChicago 2007!

Innovation Opportunities

People interested in getting more involved with innovation need to do two things: 1) determine what aspects of innovation are of interest to them, and 2) find or build innovation communities.

The following aspects of innovation are of high interest to me:
  1. Innovation in the PPNB industry supercluster (pulp & paper, printing, nonwovens, biorefinery).
  2. Tele-collaboration resources and effective real-world use of those resources.
  3. Technology innovation, especially in the computer industry, the emerging civilian space area, the nanotechnology field, portable power innovations and general internet advancements.
  4. Innovation in the Midwest USA, Wisconsin, and especially northeast Wisconsin.
  5. Innovation which significantly improves networking, entrepreneurism, collaboration and 'quality of life' in northeast Wisconsin.
  6. Innovation which may help build the tech community in the Midwest USA, especially in the CM3/I-94 region (Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis).
The second action step mentioned above is finding or building innovation communities. This second step becomes significantly easier as more of the innovation communities make their existence known to others via the internet and as internet search effectiveness improves. However, these communities are in the early stages of learning how to use the internet to make themselves findable. Internet search also has much room for improvement in understanding what a user is searching for and providing them the top ten most meaningful web page links for any given search.

There are many possible components of 'finding/building innovation communities.' I am meeting with a knowledge worker or two next week to discuss some of those components. A post on this blog next week will detail three or four of the ways we plan to 'find/build' innovation communities over the next six to twelve months.

As always, your suggestions or thoughts on this topic are encouraged and appreciated.

EAA & NEW NET Issues List for 05 Jun 2007

NEW NET (Northeast Wisconsin Network for Economy and Technology issues) is having its weekly gathering of tech enthusiasts in an exciting new location today -- at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh!

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., half an hour earlier than the normal start time. Park in the main lot by the museum/headquarters building and come in the front door. The museum and parking lot are shown in the aerial shot to the left at the bottom of the picture; the Mapquest location red star is a bit off, but Mapquest's aerial view of EAA is much better than Google Maps' view. The focus of the meeting will be aviation video games and flight simulators.

This was not a good week for announcing a new tech product -- there were so many interesting tech news items that any one announcement had little chance of being in the spotlight. With all the media attention on the iPhone, which is being released June 29, any new products may be better off being released after mid-July. There were several good iPhone articles I read, but at this point everything is speculation so wait until after they've been out a couple weeks to read about how well they are actually performing.

Reminder: Location Change for NEW NET This Week!!!

Below is the final list of issues for the TUESDAY, 05 June 02007, NEW NET 6:30 - 9:00 pm weekly gathering at EAA AirVenture Museum, 3000 Poberezny Road, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA.

Aviation Video Games, EAA and NEW NET

Aviation video games and flight simulators are an interesting subset of the electronic gaming world and of real-life simulations.

The weekly NEW NET (Northeast Wisconsin Network for Economy and Technology issues) gathering for June 5 will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the EAA Museum and Headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They have offered to host the meeting, show the NEW NET participants their flight simulator and lead a session focused on aviation video games and flight sims.

In preparation for the June 5 event, I did a little online research on the topic of aviation video games and flight simulators.

To begin with, flight simulators (the realistic cockpit type hardware/software combinations) and flight simulations (personal computer video simulations of flying a plane) have a ton of enthusiasts and information online. Here is a sample of the websites related to this topic:
Like most other topics you can imagine, there is an entire online world dedicated to flight simulations, including forums, conventions, news and reviews. If you wonder what that world is about, spend a couple hours browsing the above websites, contact a few of the people on the forums and you may find yourself sucked into a new experience.

On the topic of video games that have a primary focus of aviation, there are both personal computer games and video console games. Aviation video games include:
  • Ace Combat
  • F-15 Strike Eagle
  • F-22 Raptor
  • Falcon 4.0
  • Skyfox
  • Combat Flight Simulator
  • Chuck Yeager's Air Combat
  • Battle of Britain II Wings of Victory
Many more aviation games are listed in Wikipedia and other places online. Because I'm not an experienced flight sim user or experienced aviation gamer, I won't even attempt to explain why various ones are popular or better than others.

If you want to know more about aviation video games or flight sims, or want to share your knowledge about this topic, come to next week's NEW NET meeting.

Before the June 5th meeting, I'm going to get out Skyfox and a few other aviation games and play them to get into the spirit of the EAA-hosted gathering. If everyone who comes brings a couple of their favorite flight sims, we may end up sequestered in the EAA museum until the wee hours of the morning trying out each others' games...

SeWHiP Computing Workshop

The Southeast Wisconsin High Performance (SeWHiP) Computing Workshop held today in Milwaukee brought together an interesting mix of academic researchers, university research and IT administrators and a few other categories of people interested in high performance computing (HPC).

After a short overview of the status of HPC in southeast Wisconsin and in Milwaukee in particular, Craig Struble talked about the NSF (National Science Foundation) proposal that he and Lars Olson are putting together for a multi-institutional HPC regional center. Craig asked for input from all the workshop attendees regarding what the HPC needs and resources are, then concluded the formal part of the workshop. Attendees mingled throughout the room, writing comments and suggestions on the flipcharts, as well as greeting friends and meeting new people.

Justin Kruger and I participated in the workshop primarily because of the FireSeed Streaming Supercomputer (FS3) project. As the FS3 project moves forward, the people and organizations at the workshop are both resources and customers for the project. By participating in the workshop, Justin and I were able to both hear about what others are doing in the HPC arena and to let them know what the FS3 project is all about.

During the informal discussion and networking at the end of the workshop, I was able to meet some interesting new connections from the Milwaukee area. One person I met from UW Milwaukee is working on some intriguing innovations, one of which will hopefully lead to a really fun collaboration project for Abba Makolin Waldron & Associates, LLC (AMW).

The project involves motion and stress measurement in a flexible sensor environment. This could be a really cool project incorporating 1) the sensing system being developed by the UW Milwaukee individual 2) a material involved in a project AMW is currently working on, 3) a nanofiber nonwoven technology which is the foundation of the AMW NF Nonwovens business plan which is a finalist in the 2007 Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest and 4) production of an interesting new material at the NanoStatics facility in Ohio. Communicating between all the people and organizations potentially involved in this project will be one huge challenge, but the project will be so fun, innovative and rewarding that there's no way I can let it just pass quietly by.

On the drive back from Milwaukee to Appleton after the workshop I thought about the project, mentally compiling a list of things that need to be done. All the parties need to understand the project and make a reasonable decision about whether to move forward and dedicate resources to the project.

If you find yourself spending long hours working on projects or assignments that are uninteresting to you or that don't seem worthwhile, try participating in a few workshops or meetings for topics in which you are highly interested. While at those gatherings, make a point of talking to some of the leaders of the meeting, some of the speakers and other meeting attendees. You'll definitely find fun projects that need people to work on them.

My main challenge is that there are too many interesting projects to work on and not enough time or money....
