FireSeed Streaming Supercomputer Update

The FireSeed Streaming Supercomputer (FS3) team is getting close to having its first project grant proposal completed.

With a bit of luck and perseverance, by mid-August the grant proposal will be ready to submit to several grant organizations. Now that the AGW grant process is nearly completed, other grant opportunities will be investigated. One option is various NSF (National Science Foundation) grants. Another avenue is SBIR grants (Small Business Innovation Research). A third program to find out more about is DURIP (Defense University Research Instrumentation Program).

NSF grants -- I'm working to set up one or more meetings in August with people familiar with or connected with various NSF grants that might be appropriate for the FS3 project.

SBIR grants -- An email will go out shortly to Pat Dillon of the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs' Network, an SBIR specialist, to see if she'd be willing to meet and provide some guidance on applying for (and winning...) an SBIR grant for FS3.

DURIP grant applications are due 21 August 2007, so the FS3 team needs to start pulling that application together pretty quickly. The preceding link goes to the Office of Naval Research; here's a link to the Army DURIP application and here's a link to the Air Force DURIP program. As can be seen from the Air Force Research Areas Overview Awards webpage, the DURIP program is but one of many Air Force research programs. This page and others related to government grants highlight the value a 'grant specialist' would bring to the FS3 project. DURIP awards during FY 2006 averaged $217,000 and ranged from $51,000 to $1,000,000. An 'average' DURIP grant would be a nice way to kick the FS3 project into really high gear. The DURIP FY 2007 awards (<-- link is to a pdf file) that involved computer clusters were:
  1. High-Performance Computer Cluster
  2. Computer System for First-Principles Simulations of Molecular Solids
  3. Computer Cluster for Ab Initio Simulations of Piezoelectric Materials
  4. High-Performance Computational Cluster for Energetic Materials Research
  5. Terascale Cluster for Turbulent Combustion Simulation
  6. Computational Cluster for Multiscale Simulations of Ionic Liquids
Between the above grant opportunities and any others we connect with in the next four months, we'll either end up with a few dollars to build an FS3 alpha or beta system or at least learn lots about the process of chasing grants in America.

In addition to grant work, the FS3 team is having email discussions regarding university collaboration on the FS3 project. University participation will be helpful in many ways.
  1. Providing a good connection point with computer science students or students who need to use supercomputing power in their discipline.
  2. Providing connections with professors interested in GPU-cluster supercomputers (applications needing supercomputers, hardware specialists, software specialists).
  3. Provide a co-sponsor for FS3 meetings and roadshows.
  4. Provide university connections for grants requiring that qualification.
The FS3 team is also putting renewed effort into developing a high-quality website which can be the public interface for the FS3 project, a site to which we can point those people interested in learning what FS3 is generally about.

This project has been dormant for a couple months due to busy schedules on the part of core team members, but an updated action plan is being developed to get the project back into high gear.

Fox Valley Tech Development Group

To be most effective, a tech development group, meaning a local or regional collaborative network of scientists, engineers and other technical people, will need to have certain benefits, objectives, characteristics and structure.

The challenge for anyone launching or building a tech development group is to do a good job of market research and defining what those benefits, objectives, characteristics and structure are. The purpose of this post is to explore these aspects of a tech development group. The points listed below are just discussion points and will no doubt be improved, deleted or added to as more people get involved with the proposed tech development group.

Benefits:

  1. Fun – due to little or no free time in most people’s schedules and generally limited discretionary spending to help support this type of group, if it’s not fun, the right people will not participate.
  2. Collaborative Assistance – much of the reason to have a tech development group is to enjoy the benefits of working collaboratively with others who have complementary interests and skills.
  3. Learn new skills & tools – in order to better succeed in chosen jobs and avocations, people need to continually acquire new skills and tools.
  4. Satisfaction of mentoring – group members who have advanced knowledge and/or extensive experience usually enjoy mentoring others.

Objectives:

  1. Build and grow the local tech community (and the regional tech community) so that tech people know others with similar and complementary interests and skills who live in the same community, or at least close enough to periodically interact with in-person.
  2. Provide clear benefits to group members.
  3. Explore the options for co-working arrangements or tech office suites in the local area.
  4. Contribute to and learn from the innovation and knowledge economy efforts in Appleton, the New North and the Midwest.

Characteristics:

  1. Focus on technology
  2. Wide variety of scientists, engineers, tech enthusiasts and others with related interests
  3. People who are passionate about some aspect of technology
  4. People interested in collaborating and networking with other tech people

Structure:

  1. Formal enough organization to facilitate potential co-working facility or tech office suite
  2. Core group of people passionate about building a tech development group meet regularly and develop an action plan for building and growing the group
  3. Good tools to help members meet each other, communicate with each other, and learn each person’s areas of passionate interest, training, experience and knowledge.
  4. Regular scheduled technology mini-unconferences focused on topics of interest to some of the group’s members; allows members to learn and share in a loosely structured setting.

Innovation Workshop Group

An email was sent to me today with the suggestion that the Fox Cities (Appleton, Wisconsin and its nearby neighbors) would benefit from a "technical development group" and possibly a "technical office suite."

These two concepts make a lot of sense, and I'm absolutely interested in working on the technical development group.

A little more thought and information would be needed before starting to work on the technical office suite. It would be a fantastic opportunity for innovation, networking and collaboration related to technology in the New North. I'm sure there are at least twenty or thirty engineers and scientists in the Fox Cities (possibly hundreds of them...) who would thrive in the proposed technical office suite. However, the value proposition of the technical office suite needs significant further work. To put it another way, there is a question in my mind whether the suite would be sustainable -- a financially viable project for the long term. I don't know if there are technical office suites (as proposed in the email) in other cities or regions. If we want to move ahead with this concept, comprehensive market research would be critical. The two first steps in this research would be to establish the demand for a technical office suite in the Fox Cities and to research similar models that have been started or been successful in other areas.

The scenario which seems most likely to succeed in launching a Fox Cities technical office suite is a collaboration between interested large corporations in the region, a few small or medium companies that strongly support the concept and want to participate in ongoing seminars and workshops held at the suite, and individual tech entrepreneurs in the region, possibly with one or two VCs or angel investors participating. It would be a worthwhile experiment for such a coalition to develop and fund a two year project like this. If some or all of the coalition members found significant benefit from the technical office suite during the first two years, continued support of the suite would bring innovation to the region in a new way. It could even establish a new model for organizations like the Kauffman Foundation to take to other regions.

The focus of the Fox Cities technical development group, because of the entrepreneurs in this area with a science, engineering or general technology background, would be practical, short term innovations which would reach the market quickly, as opposed to long term, blue sky research. This is a result of the lack of a research university in the region or large corporations, laboratories or government organizations focused heavily on research.

As a result of receiving the email suggesting these technology initiatives, I sent out an email of my own asking a few people if they have an interest in pursuing the technical development group concept. If informal discussions on the topic confirm there are enough people to form a core team to work on a technical development group, I'll have a great time putting some energy into that project.

Mulling over the suggestions in the email reinforced my desire to help bring a new innovation group to life in the New North, beginning with the Fox Cities. For the purposes of today's blog post, let's call this new group the Innovation Workshop Group.

The Innovation Workshop Group (IWG) should have the following objective:

Bring people passionate about innovation together in a workshop setting to learn about an innovation tool or approach, practice that tool or approach in a small group setting, then discuss the tool or approach after practicing it.

To accomplish the above goal, it seems the following meeting format would be effective in introducing innovation tools, techniques, tips and resources to the group, giving the participants an opportunity to apply what they've been introduced to, and discussing or evaluating what they learned or used.

  1. Meet once per month
  2. Have 15 to 100 participants at each meeting (remote participation is possible, but remote participants should gather in groups of four to six so they can have face-to-face small groups)
  3. Focus on realistic innovation scenarios or exercises, preferably real life examples brought by participants
  4. Meetings are informal, but structured enough that meeting topics are planned at least three months in advance, meeting topic and small group exercise information is emailed to participants prior to each meeting and participation in small groups is tracked to ensure everyone meets new people
  5. 75% of the meetings are 2 ½ hr meetings
    1. 10 minutes of announcements and introduction of session leader (leader from within IWG)
    2. 30 minutes of explaining the tool, technique, tips or resource to the whole group
    3. 60 minutes of working on a relevant real-life innovation opportunity using the tool, technique, tip or resource in small groups of four to six people
    4. 50 minutes of the whole group discussing and evaluating the small group exercise
  6. 25% of the meetings are 4 hr meetings (once per quarter)
    1. 10 minutes of announcements and introduction of session leader (leader from outside IWG)
    2. 45 minutes of explaining the tool, technique, tips or resource to the whole group
    3. 90 minutes of working on a relevant real-life innovation opportunity using the tool, technique, tip or resource in small groups of four to six people
    4. 90 minutes of the whole group discussing and evaluating the small group exercise
The whole point of the IWG is to work on an actual innovation challenge or opportunity in small groups. IWG participants will learn different concepts of what innovation is and how it is implemented by using what they're introduced to, then discussing what they and the other participants learned from the implementation.

At the same time, by working on innovation in small groups, the participants will be getting to know the other people in their small group. IWG protocol would be to work no more than two meetings in a row with the same people. Networking between the participants will occur naturally during the small group sessions, and when there is a good interest and personality fit between participants, groups of two, three or more will end up arranging their own informal gatherings outside of the IWG meetings.

Collaboration between small group members is essential for each member to get the maximum benefit from the small group exercise. No one person should dominate the discussion, and no one should be allowed to say little or nothing during the small group exercise.

Innovation, networking and collaboration. The New North can use more of all three. IWG is one possibility for fostering and growing all three. If you know of other groups or events in the New North or elsewhere that already work on these three concepts, please drop me a note (bwaldron att gmail {dott} com). If you're interested in discussing these concepts or working on them with me, likewise send me an email or call (see the website www.goodprocess.com for more info and a phone number).

NEW NET Issues List for 03 Jul 2007

Today's NEW NET meeting could appropriately be called the iPhone meeting. It seems Steve Jobs' new mobile communicator and entertainment device was the primary topic of interest in the tech world for the past seven days. Google News even got confused by the hoopla -- at times, Google News had five or six threads going on iPhone on the Sci/Tech News page. First time I've seen that happen...

With a bit of luck, Bob P or another iPhone owner will show up at tonight's meeting, and we'll have a shootout with Andy's latest and greatest O2 smartphone.

Depending on which analyst numbers you believe, Apple raked in between US$200 million and US$400 million this weekend in iPhone purchases, whilst AT&T rang up about US$1 billion in contract fees for the next two years. A preliminary survey indicated half the purchasers were new AT&T subscribers and over 90% bought the 8 GB model. While acknowledging the iPhone's shortcomings, most reports about the device indicate Steve delivered another winner which will force or facilitate innovation that would otherwise have taken years to happen. In the same way Gmail generated benefits for all webmail users, the iPhone is bringing big improvements to all smartphone/mobile computing device users whether or not you ever touch or look at an iPhone. Thanks, Steve!
