NEW NET Issues List for 03 Jul 2007

Today's NEW NET meeting could appropriately be called the iPhone meeting. It seems Steve Jobs' new mobile communicator and entertainment device was the primary topic of interest in the tech world for the past seven days. Google News even got confused by the hoopla -- at times, Google News had five or six threads going on iPhone on the Sci/Tech News page. First time I've seen that happen...

With a bit of luck, Bob P or another iPhone owner will show up at tonight's meeting, and we'll have a shootout with Andy's latest and greatest O2 smartphone.

Depending on which analyst numbers you believe, Apple raked in between US$200 million and US$400 million this weekend in iPhone purchases, whilst AT&T rang up about US$1 billion in contract fees for the next two years. A preliminary survey indicated half the purchasers were new AT&T subscribers and over 90% bought the 8 GB model. While acknowledging the iPhone's shortcomings, most reports about the device indicate Steve delivered another winner which will force or facilitate innovation that would otherwise have taken years to happen. In the same way Gmail generated benefits for all webmail users, the iPhone is bringing big improvements to all smartphone/mobile computing device users whether or not you ever touch or look at an iPhone. Thanks, Steve!
